Events will be taking place across the town over the course of the year as Milton Keynes celebrates turning 50 in 2017. With something to do every single month, both locals and tourists will have a chance to get involved in this momentous occasion.
On 23rd January, our fantastic town turned 50 years old. Whilst the candles have been blown out and the cake has been sliced, the fun isn’t over just yet. Because the MK Council has co-ordinated a year-long programme of events and activities to take place across multiple venues. So if you haven’t already, get ready to celebrate the big birthday of our beautiful Buckinghamshire town! MK’s 50th birthday is a time of reflection and celebration and it gives us an opportunity to look back at how far we have come since the town began life in 1967. To mark the occasion, there will be events, exhibitions, parties, city tours, special walking trails, big outdoor productions and fun activities suitable for all ages. The MK50 programme includes event calendars for each season so there will be something to do from spring to winter.
In its 50th year, Milton Keynes has blossomed into a truly desirable place to live, and is perhaps one of the best known ‘new towns’ of the 20th Century. Created in the late 60s, the development of this new town was for the purpose of alleviating London's chronic housing problem, and to provide a commercial centre for the Buckinghamshire County. Architects began work with modernist designs and futuristic buildings and over the half century, Milton Keynes has undoubtedly received some unflattering press about its unique architectural style. For years, MK has struggled with being branded “soulless” by newspapers and critics. But what was once considered unsophisticated is now being hailed as “visionary”. How things can change in just 50 years, and proud we are to rise above it. So this big birthday for our town in certainly a special one and we hope everyone can join in the festivities in one way or another.
MK50 will be working with schools, local businesses, charities and different organisations to deliver an exciting, vibrant year of events. And whether you choose to take the whole family on one of the ’50 walks for MK50’ to explore our stunning scenic spots on foot, or you decide to join the ‘MK50 Art Trail’ for a bit of culture, there’s plenty to keep you busy.
Happy birthday Milton Keynes and a big toast to all MK residents! Keep checking in on our blog for more news on MK50 events near you.
