5 ways That Yoga Aids Weight Loss

5 ways That Yoga Aids Weight Loss

Ask people why they might consider doing yoga and the answer is often for flexibility gains. Few know that yoga is one of most effective workouts you can do to get and stay in shape. Here’s 5 reasons why yoga should be top of your list if you’re looking to slim down and tone up this January.

Yoga Aids Weight Loss

A HOT YOGA CLASS CAN BURN AS MANY CALORIES AS A 5K RUN

Whereas a 5k run will burn around 350 calories, a 60 minute Sweat Hot Yoga Class can burn upwards of 450. Also, while running and other high impact or gym-based workouts will develop just a few aspects of your fitness – namely strength and cardiovascular fitness – yoga does that and more. While you’re toning up and losing weight, you’re improving your flexibility, posture and balance, as well as warding off future problems such as bad backs and arthritis, to name but a few.

YOGA IS A VERY SAFE FORM OF EXERCISE

While workouts such as running and the gym stress and strain your joints, yoga protects them. You can do yoga every day. There is no need for rest days as there are with other exercise pursuits. This means you can workout more often and see results more quickly.

YOGA WILL CHANGE YOUR SHAPE

As well as burning calories, yoga tones your body, giving you a better shape. As the only resistance you use is your own body weight, you develop lean, supple, strong muscle. Also, poses such as twists will not only keep your spine and internal organs in great shape, they’ll aid your digestion (no more bloated tummy) and trim and tighten your waist.

YOGA REDUCES YOUR STRESS AND BALANCES YOUR HORMONES TO REGULATE YOUR WEIGHT

Weight gain is increasingly being scientifically linked to stress. Yoga classes help reduce your stress. By reducing your stress, you lower the amount of cortisol in your body. High levels of this hormone have been linked to weight gain. So even more sedate yoga classes, such as our Flex class, which won’t burn calories, but will focus on teaching you to breathe calmly and clear your mind to reduce your stress and anxiety, can help you lose weight. In addition, certain yoga poses stimulate your thyroid gland which helps balance your hormones and regulate your metabolism.

WEIGHT LOSS WILL BE MORE RAPID AND SUSTAINED THROUGH LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Yoga promotes a healthier lifestyle and better food choices.

A hot yoga class requires high  levels of hydration. By drinking more water you are less hungry. In addition, as you can’t take a yoga class on a full stomach, you eat less during the day (focusing on smaller, more easily digestable portions) and stay away from carb-heavy meals. You’ll naturally crave better foods and find yourself focusing on complex carbohydrates, lean proteins and lots of fruits and vegetables to help fuel the energy needed for class and your hydration levels.

SO WHAT’S STOPPING YOU?

So, if you’ve got a weight loss goal this January, why not give our classes a go? If you really want to get in shape, consider signing up for the 30 day challenge. Simply do a yoga class every day for 30 days and make exercise front and centre in your life. That’ll get the weight off and keep it off for the long term.
